Why Repairability Matters and How We're Helping the Next Generation Get Involved
What does the ‘Repairability’ of a product mean?
The ‘repairability’ of a product is the ease in which a product can be taken apart, and be repaired or restored to its original function. This is important as it decreases the need to replace products which contributes to the reduction of electronic waste (or e-waste), cost savings and a positive environmental impact.
France’s 2020 Repairability Score and European Union Right to Repair
In 2020, France introduced a law that requires manufacturers to display a repairability score out of 10 on many electronic products. The goal was to encourage brands to design products that are easier to fix, not just replace. This score helps consumers make more informed choices and puts pressure on companies to think about repair from the start. The move has already influenced wider policy discussions, the European Union adopted new Right to Repair rules in April 2024, making it easier and more affordable to repair everyday products. Manufacturers are now required to provide timely, cost-effective repairs, spare parts, and repair information, even after the warranty has expired.
But how can you measure the repairability of your product in the UK?
The UK has introduced Right to Repair rules that require manufacturers to provide spare parts for some household appliances for up to 10 years. However, the legislation covers fewer products and doesn’t include repairability scores, so it still falls behind the approach taken in France and across the EU.
However, you can still measure repairability of electronics yourself. One of the best resources is iFixit’s Repairability Scores, which rate a wide range of gadgets including smartphones, tablets, laptops, wireless earbuds, e-readers, smartwatches, and mini PCs.
iFixit rates devices on things like tricky screws, hard-to-open designs, missing parts or manuals and software that blocks repairs. It’s a quick and easy way to see how repair-friendly something is. This means you can make the decision of which products to buy in regards to repairability yourself, regardless of legislation.
What We’re Doing: Teaching Young People Repair at Team Repair
Team Repair aims to tackle this problem at the root. Our programme equips young people with repair skills using interactive, hands-on kits. It teaches children how to take apart, understand, and fix broken electronic devices. Along the way, they explore key STEM concepts, build problem-solving skills, and gain the confidence to repair rather than replace.
Each kit encourages curiosity and learning through play. Kids disassemble and rebuild actual gadgets, learning not just how things work, but also how to bring them back to life. By making repair fun and accessible, Team Repair is inspiring a new generation to think sustainably and embrace a repair mindset.
